Project Description
The landfill comprises a waste cell (roughly 200 x 100m) as part of the larger waste landfill site in Malta. The waste cell has previously been used for hazardous waste and is to be re-utilised for the disposal of non-hazardous waste. The existing cell is to be extended to optimize the void capacity requiring steepening of the side-walls and deepening of the excavation in the Lower Coralline Limestone bedrock. Additionally, the area to the southeast of the cell, currently used for temporary storage /processing, is to be included in the new cell.
Project Overview
Client Name
Landfill Operator
Location
Malta
Services Provided
-
Stage 1 briefing note: Conceptual design of proposed excavation profile and layout to extend the void incorporating access and egress route, leachate lining system and drainage.
-
Provide initial estimates of the increase in waste capacity.
-
Conceptual design of construction sequence for lining system including boulder buttresses.
Added Value
The works undertaken by LEAP satisfied the clients requirement for significantly increasing the cells void volume while meeting environmental performance requirements. The conceptual design provides an environmentally and structurally sound construction sequence which involves using locally derived landfill materials to minimize waste and material costs. Leap has identified further analysis required to finalise these designs and allow construction to begin.
