CReDiT Remediation is a carbon tool that is used to model and evaluate the carbon emissions generated from different site remediation options. It determines CO2 emissions from the various complex processes involved in the process, e.g. excavation of soil, the importation of raw materials, the transport of those and the waste, recycling and reuse of substances.
CReDiT Remediation has been designed to simulate the complex movement of materials on a site. Different fractions of excavated items have potential reuse or reprocessing options. The use and disposal of this material significantly affects the sustainability of the remediation process and its carbon emissions.
The tool classifies the excavated and screened material. Each fraction is allocated to a defined stream in terms of onsite reuse, offsite reuse, reprocessing or landfill. This substance volume / reuse calculation also considers infill or clean cover requirements for the site.
The tool promotes greater understanding of the impact of the processes on carbon emissions and enables carbon reduction to be included as a factor in remediation design and options appraisal.
It provides an evaluation of different options, clearly demonstrating potential carbon savings which can be assessed and optimised alongside more traditional commercial considerations at the design stage.
This tool will be included as standard within remediation design and options appraisal reports prepared by LEAP resulting in:
- remediation with carbon reduction leading the design
- onsite materials considered a resource rather than a ‘waste’
- reuse options considered for all material streams
- a reduction in material sent to landfill
- realising financial savings for our clients.
