LEAP has designed CReDiT Earthworks, a carbon calculator for earthworks design. This tool is used where earthworks are to be undertaken as part of the site redevelopment or construction activity. It calculates the total equivalent carbon of the earthwork activities and both on site and off-site transport.
Activities included in CReDiT Earthworks are typical excavation and soil infill requirements for residential developments. Others such as topsoil stripping, foundation excavation and the construction of drainage pipes/chambers, road and open space are included. The total equivalent carbon in using the earthworks machinery, importing infill material, transporting and depositing excess material on reuse sites or landfilling the excess soil is calculated.
The calculations are based on site-specific data, most of which is available or can be gathered as part of our standard Phase II site investigation. If available, earthworks assessment plans can be used as input, or for preliminary assessments. Then, the required work can be estimated from site plans. The calculator also considers onsite movement of soil stockpiles (for different types, e.g. topsoil, sub soil and made ground), calculating the equivalent carbon for each stockpile movement.
A simplified site ground model is used, but with the facility to select from a range of different soil types.
The calculations also consider any made ground present. Depending on whether this is contaminated, or not, and suitable for reuse. For more complex remediation projects, CReDiT Remediation is recommended.
